About Us

The first Care and Repair projects in Scotland were established by Age Concern in Tollcross in Edinburgh in 1985, the Western Isles in 1986 and Leith in Edinburgh in 1987. The Care and Repair Initiative (Scotland), was launched in 1987 by the Scottish Office Environment Department, Shelter and Age Concern (Scotland), to meet the needs of elderly and disabled people living in private housing which was in poor repair or below the tolerable standard.  Local projects were set up in eight areas, with a national co-ordinator based in Shelter’s Glasgow office.

In 1995 the Tollcross and Leith projects amalgamated under the management of Age Concern Scotland, serving the whole city of Edinburgh, and became fully independent in 2003.

Care and Repair Edinburgh Ltd is a Scottish charity, a company limited by guarantee, and governed by a board of Directors who give their time voluntarily.  There are eleven paid staff, headed by the Care and Repair Manager, Jan Souter.
